Stitch With a Variety of Threads

You can select from different fibers such as cotton, silk, and wool; embrace a rainbow of gorgeous colors, shades, variegations, and overdyes; and use textures such as fuzzy, velvet, and shiny. Another wonderful facet of needlepoint is the ability to customize your project exactly as you please. You can stitch the entire canvas in basketweave and one type of thread, or you can incorporate decorative stitches and a variety of threads. Dimensional stitches add visual interest with contrast that pops off the weave of the canvas. Think like an artist and look at each of the specific design elements on the canvas. Consider which different threads paired with decorative stitches can capture the real-life essence of these components. For example, create snow using the woven stitch in silk lamé braid, make an animal come to life with long stitches, add dimension to Santa’s coat with turkey-work trim, or create full greenery with French knots in a variegated thread such as straw silk.
