All about thread dye lots!
This blog post will go over why it is important to save the tags, and how we cannot control dye lot changes!
 Silk and Ivory
You know the feeling. You’re happily stitching along when suddenly, you realize in horror that you have only a little bit of thread left. How will you finish your project? How will you find more thread?

You race into your LNS (local needlepoint shop) with the small, tiniest bit of thread left. Desperation in your eyes, you thrust the thread into the hands of the first person you see. “Can I purchase more of this?!”

Now here’s where things get tricky. If you haven’t saved your thread tags or card, it will be much more difficult for your LNS to help. Many threads have a similar appearance (many round threads look the same, for example) and can be tough to match. Further still, threads can change dye lots!

Certain threads are historically better than others when it comes to dye lots. While some threads change dye lots frequently, others have been known to stay steady over years. Threads can change colors from dye batch to dye batch and occasionally, the color changes are significant!

How can you avoid this common problem? There are two solutions.
  1.   Save your thread tags and cards. Having the correct thread information can be a great first-step in finding more thread for your project.
  2.   Purchase enough thread for your project initially. Now, this can be a tricky prospect. Different stitches require a different amount of thread – and we’ve all put in stitches only to pull them out in frustration. Keep an eye on your thread as you stitch; the sooner you reach out to purchase more thread for a project, the better your chances of finding exactly what you need in the correct dye lot!

By keeping your thread tags and cards – and monitoring your threads as you go – you’ll have a much better chance of successfully finishing your project!
