Tell us about yourself, beyond the needle and thread.
I was studying design in the UK and gained a Bachelor of Arts degree in fashion/print design. As a child, I loved drawing and art in general. I have a love of Nature and Gardening, thanks to my parents, who were keen gardeners, and a childhood growing up in the English countryside. I also love traveling, especially in Europe with its rich cultural heritage. Outside of work, I am a bit of a fitness addict and belong to a CrossFit club in London.
What first sparked your interest in needlepoint?
In my 20’s I was working for a fashion textile house in London. A friend from university was working for a bespoke needlepoint company based in Chelsea. She approached me asking if I would like some freelance work designing for this company. So my journey began. I soon developed an appreciation for this beautiful pastime.
What’s your favorite part of the design process?
Funnily, my favorite part of the design process is actually seeing my designs stitched, where they finally come to life and I get a sense of satisfaction that I’ve done a good job! The wool adds such richness that you can only appreciate once the design has been stitched.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Inspiration for projects comes from all over the place. I can be something I see in a shop, something that pops up online, or a trip to a gallery or museum. Once I have an idea of how I'm going to approach a design, I will look anywhere and everywhere to help with creating the design as I visualize it.
Do you have a favorite canvas in your line?
This is a hard one! I love our Chelsea Garden series as they were a break from the more traditional designs. However, I think my favorite is the Blooms Hydrangea. Capturing the delicate shades of the petals as they change was a real challenge, so I was so thrilled to see the finished result. This also happens to be one of our best-selling kits.
What advice would you give to a new stitcher?
This would be the same advice I got myself when starting out. Begin with simple designs. Something small and gradually build your confidence.
