Understanding the Canvas: Needlepoint canvases are available in different mesh sizes, typically 18 or 13 mesh. For beginners, a larger mesh size is easier to work with so we usually recommend starting with a 13-mesh canvas.
Selecting Threads: Explore the world of threads! Most kits include a selection, but as you progress, you can experiment with different textures and materials. Cotton, silk, and wool are the most common types as well as blends.
Basic Needlepoint Stitches:
Tent Stitch: The foundation of needlepoint, the tent stitch, is easy to learn. It involves stitching diagonally across a single canvas intersection. Rows of tent stitches lay flat and don't offer many variations. Still, there are several different types of tent stitches, some of which provide more coverage, durability, and versatility than others.
Basketweave Stitch: Ideal for covering large areas, the basketweave stitch ensures a smooth and even result. It's a technique that minimizes distortion of the canvas and is considered the sturdiest stitch style. Though it looks like the Tent Stitch from the front, the technique and the pattern it produces on the back of the canvas are different.
Tips for Beginners:
Use Stretcher Bars: Keeping your canvas taut makes stitching easier. Invest in stretcher bars to maintain proper tension and reduce strain on your hands. The canvas is placed on top of the bars and attached using brass tacks.
Start Small: Begin with a small and manageable project to build your confidence. Ornaments are a great place to start! Gradually progress to more complex designs as you become comfortable with the stitches.
