Steps to Create Variegated Thread
1. Take a look at your canvas. Decide if you prefer a subtle or bold look based on what you are stitching.
2. Pick your threads. Plyable threads are a must - DMC Floss is our favorite for this project. Cut lengths of each color, ensuring they are of equal length.
3. Start by pulling apart your chosen threads, taking into account how many strands are needed for the mesh count of canvas you're stitching on. For 18-count canvas with DMC Floss, for example, you need 4 ply so we will use 2 ply of each color.
4. Combine the different colors by lining all the strands up with each other and smoothing and gently twisting them together with your fingers to create a seamless strand of varying levels of blending and contrast.
5. Once the strands are twisted together, hold them against your canvas to assess variegated effect. Make adjustments as needed by adding or removing strands.
6. You're ready to stitch! We recommend taking note of the thread combination you used so you have no trouble replicating it in the future.
