We love self-finishing needlepoint projects! These all-leather luggage tags by Planet Earth are easy to finish and look professionally done.
Watch this short video to see how easy it is to insert your stitched canvas into a leather luggage tag.
Here are the written step-by-step instructions:
Ensure you have stitched enough of the canvas so that it will completely cover the opening in the luggage tag, or stitch more if you need to.
Make sure your canvas is "square" so that the line of stitching is parallel with the edges of the opening. Block it square if you need to.
Trim away the excess canvas so you have 2-3 rows of spare canvas left around the outside of the design.
Remove the paper layer in the window of the luggage tag so the sticky layer is exposed. This is best done by scoring across the paper with a sharp knife or scissors and lifting the backing off starting where it has been cut. Make sure to remove all the paper, even under the leather flaps.
Use a dinnerware (blunt) knife to separate the leather flap at the top of the opening from the sticky paper.
Center your stitched canvas on the opening of the tag. Line up the top long edge of the stitched canvas with the top long edge of the luggage tag flap so the stitches line up straight with the edge of the leather. Use the knife to help tuck the excess canvas under the flap.
Once you have this edge in place press down in the center of the stitching so it adheres to the sticky paper and doesn't move around.
Use the knife to lift all the other leather flaps from off the sticky paper and then tuck the canvas edges under. It may be easier for you to tuck in the top, bottom, and sides before tucking in the corners. Use your blunt knife to make sure you don't have any folds under the edges or "dog ears" in the corners. You may need to go around a few times before you get all the edges flat and in place.
Admire your handiwork; attach your tag to your favorite luggage; and book tickets!
